Another controversial cinematic look at the life of Jesus opens in theaters this Friday (May 13).

Last Days in the Desert, a new film by Colombian director Rodrigo Garcia, follows imagined events that take place during the Gospel story of Jesus’ forty days of fasting and prayer in the desert. On his way out of the wilderness, he encounters an ordinary family in crisis and becoming involved in their troubles setting a dramatic test for himself with human conflicts. He also struggles throughout the movie with the Devil who seeks to distract, tempt, and confuse the Son of God.

Jesus is portrayed by Sottish actor, Ewan McGregor, well known for his roles in the Star Wars movies, Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge!, Angels and Demons, and more.

The sparse, intent film reportedly delivers a very human portrait of Jesus, depicting him a man tortured by his fate and doubtful of his purpose. He is frustrated by his difficulty in talking with his father – a God who is always present in the movie, but never shown.

Many Christians have already criticized the film for its non-literal take on the life of Jesus.

“We didn’t make a movie that’s offensive to people of faith. I think that is the truth,” says McGregor. “We didn’t set out to offend them, or not offend them. We made a film about the relationships between fathers and sons, and the lead character is Jesus.”

One of the most interesting relationships in the film promises to be the one between Jesus and Lucifer. They argue, criticize, cajole, and discuss the nature of God.

Last Days in the Desert was directed by Rodrigo Garcia and stars Ewan McGregor, Tye Sheridan, Ayelet Zurer, and Ciaran Hinds. Look for it in theaters, this Friday, May 13th.
