Bar Exam: Higgs – Pray Feat. Illtalian (Single)
A One Listen Review
Today I’ll be listening to Higgs single “Pray” featuring Illtalian. I’m not familiar with Higgs at all, but Illtalian has been a familiar face around these parts in 2018. Let’s go.
Song starts with orchestra sounds, organs, and the music swells.
Higgs begins to sing. “Another night with no answers but I sit here staring at the sky/Wishing I could walk on water/I keep on sinking time after time/feels like the sun won’t stop setting/I’m out of happy endings/I can’t tell when this is gonna break/dreams all come up empty/no use in pretending that i can carry this on my own strength/sometimes all you can do is pray”
Decent singing continues the song as the beat drops. Topically talking about doubt. It feels really good.
Illtalian brings the introspective flow. Starts low key and adds some intensity as the beat layers in. Huge pop influence on this track. Reminds me of a warm and fuzzy Macklemore track. He goes for 16 bars and wraps up with the conclusion “all you can do is pray.”
Illtalian does an ok job at staying on point. Progresses from ideas of not hearing or feeling God, to living in devotion because God’s always there, then back to times he couldn’t see God at work, then back again to God being there. Some of the rhymes were predictable – while/smile/while/child… missin’/mission/Christian. Ill really brings confidence with the flow though, and the direction and those rhymes don’t detract from what he does on this track.
Sonically it sounds like a radio hit. Higgs has a simple voice but it’s very pleasing to hear. Higgs carries the song with this laid back challenge to pray. The beat doesn’t remain stagnant, and enhances the performances of both artists as the song goes. Illtalian’s flow was probably at the bar here for me, but all things considered I have this song slightly above the bar.
