Ben Carson to Donald Trump — No Thanks

Retired neurosurgeon and former presidential candidate, Ben Carson said today that it is unlikely he will join the Trump administration Cabinet.

Carson, who has been a supporter and confidant to President-elect Trump since withdrawing his own candidacy, told The Washington Post “The way I’m leaning is to work from the outside and not from the inside. I want to have the freedom to work on many issues and not be pigeonholed into one particular area.”

It’s been widely reported that Carson has been under consideration for several positions in Trump’s Cabinet, including secretary of health and human services. Carson admitted that offers had been made, “I was offered things, there’s no question about that. I don’t want to go into the details.”

Carson said he has made his decision not to sign on clear to Trump in several recent private conversations.

Carson later expanded on his reasons for not wanting to take a Cabinet position in a Facebook post: “My decision not to seek a cabinet position in the Trump administration has nothing to do with the complexity of the job as is being reported by some news outlets. I believe it is vitally important for the Trump administration to have many outspoken friends and advisers who are outside of the Washington bubble. It is vital to have independent voices of reason and reconciliation if our nation is to heal and regain its greatness. I will continue to work with the transition team and beyond as we build a dynamite executive branch of government.”

Armstrong Williams, Carson’s business manager, said, “Trump is a brother to Dr. Carson and they’ve formed a formidable bond.” He added that Carson will continue to work with Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence on the transition and to share policy and personnel suggestions.
