Justin Bieber gets new tattoo. Is that OK for Christians?

0

Justin Bieber just got some new ink. Just a little ink. On his face. It’s a tiny cross just under the corner of his eye.

What’s that all about? The tattoo artist who did the job, Jonathan “Jonboy” Valena explained in a statement to US Weekly: “It represents his journey in finding purpose with God.”

The 22-year-old singer reportedly now has 52 tattoos – many of them with religious meaning and significance.

Bieber is a devout Christian who has expressed his faith several times through his tattoos. He has the word “Yeshua” inked on his side, a portrait of Jesus on his leg, Psalm 119 on his shoulder blade, and a large cross in the middle of his chest, among others. Now, you can add a cross in the corner of his eye to his collection of religious themed body art.

Is it okay for Christians to get tattoos? Is it a sin?

As for God’s instruction regarding tattoos, the Bible does not specifically address the modern practice of tattooing as body adornment.

Leviticus 19:28 says, “You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord,” but most people consider this to be an Old Testament admonishment against practices related to mourning for the dead.

Several scriptures instruct Christians to take special care of their bodies, but are not specific to tattoos. 1 Corinthians 3:17 says, “If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.”

Many Christians believe that tattoos are perfectly fine. They contend that tattoos can serve to glorify God and bear witness to an individual’s faith. They feel that tattoos celebrate God rather than disobey Him.

So, what’s your opinion of Christians getting tattoos? Right? Wrong? Sinful? Glorifying? Send us a pic or your God-honoring tattoos or your reasons against them.
