Kirk Franklin Prays for Kanye West During “Ultralight Beam” Performance on SNL

There has been a LOT of chatter about Kanye lately. Mostly to do with his new album The Life of Pablo but also with Christians condemning Kanye for saying his album is a Gospel album and also condemning Kirk Franklin for even being pictured with the man.

Recently we wrote, “Is Kirk Franklin Shining His Light in Mainstream Music?” This article describes Franklin’s involvement with West along with Chance the Rapper and Justin Bieber. All of these artists we have written about and supported their current quest for Christ as they seem to in battle with their soul.

On Saturday Night Live this past weekend West performed a song called “Ultralight Beam” which featured a choir and Franklin praying over West at the end of the song.

Father, this prayer is for everybody that feels like giving up. This prayer is for everybody who feels like they are not good enough. Everybody that said I’m sorry too many times. Jesus, that’s why I’m glad you came to give us eternal life. I’m so glad about it. And in this war we’ve been we’ve been looking for. God please keep my little brother safe.

Franklin did decide to respond to his many critics on Instagram.

Kanye is not me. I am not him. He is my brother I am proud to do life with. No sprints, but Marathons; like most of us are on. Before one song was released, I was crucified because my brother asked me to take a picture. Again “no Kanye, you’re not good enough”? No. That is a dangerous message I believe we send to the world when our posture is they have to meet certain requirements before they are worthy to kiss the ring. It says people are not redeemable, forgivable or candidates for grace. That my friend is religious. I will not turn my back on my brother. I will love him, prayerfully grow with him. However long he’ll have me, and however long the race takes. To a lot of my Christian family, I’m sorry he’s not good enough, Christian enough, or running at your pace…and as I read some of your comments, neither am I. That won’t stop me from running. Pray we win.

A lot of people may hate what Franklin is doing. Most will say Franklin is no longer a Christian. Didn’t Christ hang out with sinners? Didn’t Christ shine his light in the darkness? How often does someone get to say that Jesus gave them eternal life on live tv?

  1. Y’all are all whack. You keep forgetting who Jesus hung out with… Acting like you read a bible but don’t know the saviors ways.

  2. As long as Kirk has a strong foundation to keep him grounded in Christ, then all power to Him and he should go forth.  Jesus did hang with sinners but he never compromised during that time either.  Not saying Kurt has, and the future will show the true fruit of his work, but you should not have to compromise to bring someone to Christ.
