The Internet is a place to share your thoughts and express your opinions. Depending on the things you say, people may agree, disagree, join in on the conversation, or pass on by.
If you happen to be famous or in the public eye for some reason, your sharing can get a much higher degree of scrutiny and attention. If you happen to be the wife of an NBA superstar and renowned for being a Christian, your comments can ignite a storm.
That’s just what Ayesha Curry, wife of Golden State Warrior Stephen Curry, found out this past Saturday, December 5th when she posted a few seemingly innocent remarks on Twitter regarding fashion trends and dressing “classy”.
Here are the comments that lit the match.
The remarks touched off a night of frenzied response ranging from outrage about her “old-fashioned” views and anger that she was “shaming” others who dressed in less, to support for her opinions and modest tastes. Men jumped in, names were called, reactions were vented. Although Ayesha stayed out of most of it, her fame and unapologetic Christianity no doubt fueled the flames.
The commentary wasn’t all negative. Supporters of Ayesha also came to her defense…
It was a classic example of how the Internet can jump on statements, leap to conclusions, twist meanings, and polarize into warring camps of commentary.
Throughout it all though, Ayesha and Stephen remained calm and bemused. Later interviews reported they found the whole event somewhat surprising and even humorous.
What’s your take on the whole thing? Were her comments out of line? Was she just making innocent remarks about fashion that got blown out of proportion? Does her being a prominent Christian in the public eye add to the issue?
Agree or disagree, I think everyone can agree that whatever dressing “classy” means to you, Ayesha showed us all how to ACT classy when you’re under intense Internet fire.
